EPIRBS—New Rules For 2007

Start Date: January 1, 2007

For those boaters that use an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon as part of their boat safety gear, this is a reminder that beginning January 1st 2007, both 121.5 and 243 mega hertz emergency position-indicating radio beacons are prohibited from use in both commercial and recreational watercraft. The regulation applies to all Class A, Class B, and Class S 121.5/243 mega hertz EPIRBs.

The Coast Guard says that if you wish to have an emergency rescue beacon aboard your boat, you must have a digital 406 mega hertz model. You will be required to register your 406mHz unit in the U.S. 406 MHz Beacon Registration Database.
